STATION UPDATES
Due to all the insanity over the past two-to-three months, I never got around to a few things...

First, my featured selections for August/September, were never loaded. So along with my October Features, you'll be hearing all the August/September Features I chose, but never got up because of a lack of time.

And second, for the same lack of time reason I haven't updated the concert calendar since the end of August. As a consequence I ended up with about 77+ emails clogging my inbox. To go through all those emails and update the calendar would probably have taken me close to 20+ hours. Time I don't have, especially next month, when I will find myself back in school (for the first time in six years...).

So to make a long story short... The calendar has been put on indefinite hiatus. Those of you who may have used it, should check out ohmyrockness.com for up-to-date concert listings...

VIVA LA VINYL
A couple of years ago, I remember thinking about how obsolete cd's have become. I mean, if you want quality, you buy vinyl. And if you want portability, you buy/download MP3's. Plus if you're really into album artwork and packaging, it's pretty hard to beat vinyl, which frequently comes in limited editions and handmade sleeves. Also another great plus, vinyl tends to be a bit more affordable. CD's usually range from $12-18, while the vinyl versions are usually about $2 bucks cheaper. So the only problem with vinyl that I could come up with, the only way it doesn't beat cd's, is that it's impossible to rip to your MP3 player, unless you have the right (read: expensive) equipment and some spare (read: unemployed) time. So batting all this around my head one day, I thought wouldn't it be wonderful, if all the records you bought, came with a free download of the album in MP3 form. But considering all the hoopla around the "evil" "file-sharing" "bootlegging" MP3, I figured it would never happen...

But lo and behold, sometimes dreams come true!

Matador has started doing it! And apparently it's in response to Merge Records doing it! That's two pretty big indie labels, and hopefully they'll be more jumping on this bandwagon! WOO HOO! Long Live Vinyl!

VIVA LA FRANCE
According to a news report I heard on NPR, The French Government is currently deciding on Legislation that will ban the sale of Digital Rights Managed music in France, most notably music from Apple's iTunes, which the French rightly claim are creating a monopoly by selling music that only work on iPod's. Hear the report on NPR, and imagine what it would be like to live in a country that cares.

I should also note, that none of the music you hear on Radio Atreyu, has been purchased in the iTunes Music Store; and not because we are snobs or anything, but because of their Digital Rights Management, they make it impossible to share our music LEGALLY, if we choose to purchase music through their store.

NYC SOCIAL SCENE: BROKEN

During my bi-weekly consumption of concert-listing publications, I came to the realization that Broken Social Scene will not be making an appearance in NYC in support of their latest self-titled album. Their extensive tour will cover 8 Canadian and 14 American cities before venturing overseas to visit their European canuckaphile fans. Now I'm sure Lawrence, Kansas is a fine town but there is no chance in Constantine's hell that their BSS fanbase can buy more concert tickets than their NYC counterparts. So why the overt snub, Broken Social Scene? Why hast thou forsaken us? Humph. Pffft. Sigh.

If you can, go see them. They put on a great show.

"Good Nintentions" Indeed! The homepage of The Advantage's website says it all. When I saw The Advantage open for Solex last year, I was totally floored when I realized all the completely instrumental (not to mention no synths!) songs they were performing, were covers of 8-bit nintendo game music. Afterwards I thought it was a great idea, and didn't think much about it afterwards until recently when I discovered a couple of other video game homages invading the music scene. First I ran across The 32-Bit Handhelds on myspace, whose website, is hands down, just brilliant... Oh yea, and I should mention they rock too! And then, out of nowhere came the mega festival Video Games Live. Which is just way too much to explain... So you just have to go there and see the insanity for yourself.

WOW! It truly is the end of an era folks. Columbia House Music Club is closing. This news totally floored me upon reading it. Granted it's not totally shocking news, I myself haven't purchased much from them in the past few years, so I can only imagine other people really haven't spent too much time shopping there either. But man oh man, Columbia House Music Club is closing. This is crazy. I remember when I first joined the club, back in 1991, when I got my first CD player, the summer before I started 8th grade. They were great for stocking up on classic back catalog stuff. They supplied me with classics from Talking Heads, The Ramone's and other classic punk records, Depeche Mode and other classic 80's groups, RUN DMC and other great old school hip hop albums; they also supplied me with tons of crap, some of which I won't mention here, less I lose any indie cred I might have. But man oh man, Columbia House Music Club is closing. Lets everyone pause their iPods, or any other MP3 Player you own, and observe a moment of silence for the passing of the Columbia House Music Club. This is a sad day.

Seemingly, our "wonderful" Republican run Congress is trying to cut funding for the only 2 (well maybe not the only, but certainly 2 of the best) reliable sources for news out there...not to mention the only commercial free children's programming on tv.

"In less than a day, we've blown past our goal—more than 300,000 of us have signed the petition to save NPR and PBS from losing public funding. This is huge, but we need your help.

Tomorrow, the House Appropriations Committee will decide whether to approve these severe cuts to NPR and PBS. We can stop the cuts—and save public TV and radio—with a strong show of public outrage. We'll report to the committee members on our petition before they vote.

NEW TEENAGE FANCLUB ON MERGE JUNE 7TH

Merge Records is proud to announce that on June 7th, 2005 we will have the distinct pleasure of releasing the new Teenage Fanclub album in the U.S. and Canada. Man-Made will be the band’s 8th LP, and first in nearly 3 years. We could not be more excited to be working with one of our all-time favorite bands!
