MINIPIX
Saw Mates of State perform at North Six! This was our second time seeing them play... and boy was this show Great! In addition to performing songs from their newest album (which I just picked up and is incredible I might add!), Our Constant Concern, they also performed many crowd pleasing favorites from their debut album, My Solo Project, as well as, a couple of new songs I didn't recognize, but instantly LOVED! Its hard to put your finger on, so to speak, but Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel's music and vocals are charged with an electricity that jumps back and forth between them during their performance... You can see these sparks highlighted in their eye's, as they dart looks back and forth at each other, keeping close watch on what the other is doing. My favorite part of that night's performance were two songs that I hadn't heard before, and in which Jason stole the spotlight! In the first song, he got up from his drum set and stood up, which seemed really odd and uncharacteristic for some reason, but was really great as his performance at the mic became an intimate serenade to the audience, unlike anything I had ever seen before on stage. The second song, which I didn't recognize, had Jason using a toy-like accordion that left a smile on my face for quite sometime after the song was over...
