ELVIS OR BETTY BOOP

Welcome to the World of THOU...
Where things aren't always right side up, and sounds not always predictable...but always addictive! Upon first listening to Elvis or Betty Boop, I found myself simultaneously enjoying and comparing their new tracks to the songs off their last album, Put Us In Tune, pessimistically expecting to be disappointed. I found, to my surprise, myself entirely rapt in the album. Similar stylistically to their last album, but comparitively...Elvis or Betty Boop takes Put Us In Tune to the next level. The songs are more cohesive, tighter, seperate distinct thoughts and styles, produced to flow together in a blurry manner and then taken furthur...

The first track, "Elvis or Betty Boop", rocks out in a very bluesy pop way, but by the time you reach track six, "Mood", the music has completely flipped to a much dancier tempo, and vocally more in line with Massive Attack or PJ Harvey than the JSBX growls of track one. Happening in a seemingly accidental but cohesive manner I often find myself wondering how I get from one song to the next on the album; which sounds like a photomosaic, a million (or 13) distinct pictures blaring out and blending together almost seamlessly, creating...

NOTHING SHORT OF ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!

Other ingenious moments on the album include "YEAH! YEAH!", their latest single, for which a great and fun video was made by François Mercier. (a link to which you will find below). The song itself is both whimsical and melodic in very Beck-ish way, complete with bleeps, blips, and dots of sounds that go off on tangents and speak to the toils of relationships--and never once sound trite or obvious!

After many, many, many listens and deep, deep, deep, consideration did i come up with a favorite track from an album of favorite tracks...

"Slow Down"
Which begins with a throbbing pop rhythm and a quickly elevating melody and sound reminiscent of James' Seven album. Mixing in Bart's smooth and Does' sultry voice adds a resounding depth to the lyrics, part of which: "Take your time, Slow it down, Why should we do it today, If we can do it tomorrow, We can do it tomorrow..." is just Sooooooo Good + I love! *benny
